Welcome, newly elected officials! Congratulations on your recent election or appointment. As you embark on this journey of public service, the Florida League of Cities (FLC) is here as a resource to you.

Within your first six months in office, we recommend taking advantage of the following programs and resources:




1. Get to know your city

Use this orientation checklist as a guide to collect information that will help you familiarize yourself with your municipality and other intergovernmental agencies.  

2. Attend training for newly elected officials 

  • Online Orientation for Newly Elected Officials. This online orientation consists of mixed media lessons covering all aspects of municipal governance and municipal services. Learn More
  • Institute for Elected Municipal Officials (IEMO). This in-person educational program is specially designed for elected officials with less than one term in office. IEMO offers a comprehensive overview of Florida municipal government presented by top professionals in the field. Learn More

After your first six months in office, we recommend taking advantage of the following programs and resources: 

 

1. Complete your ethics training

A state-mandated requirement for all of Florida's elected officials offered by FLC University quarterly. Learn More  

2. Save or print the Florida Municipal Officials Manual

A Florida-specific reference guide for elected officials and municipal staff. Bookmark or print the manual for a handy reference. View Manual  

3. Become an advocate

Learn how to use your voice to protect local decision-making in your community.;

  • Read the Advo-Kit. This online advocacy toolkit contains information, resources and examples for all levels of advocacy, particularly beginners. Access the Advo-Kit
  • Participate in the Online Advocacy Course. This virtual program is designed to help city officials understand the legislative process and learn strategies to become strong, effective advocates. Register Here

A comprehensive overview of Florida municipal government offered at different locations throughout the state. Learn More

4-Hour State-Mandated Ethics Training
