Remote Work

August 1, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

ICMA Practice Areas: 4, 9, 10 and 13

Program Summary:

Remote work dates to the invention of the telegraph in the early 19th century and became more common with the advent of the web in the early 1990s. When the coronavirus escalated in the United States in March 2020, local governments were forced to implement remote work policies for staff that, in many cases, supported first responders and essential front-line staff during emergency events. As the pandemic has subsided, many agencies have retained remote and hybrid work policies, and public servants have come to expect, if not demand, such policies. This program explores the advantages and challenges resulting from the remote and hybrid work revolution.

Objectives:

  • Evaluate the benefits and disadvantages of remote/hybrid work policies and analyze situations where such policies are appropriate
  • Understand the financial implications of remote/hybrid work
  • Explore the impact of remote/hybrid work on recruitment and retention of qualified employees
  • Discuss best practices for implementing a remote/hybrid work policy

Presented by:
